2013 hits and misses

I never believed the superstition that #13 is unlucky but I must say lady luck was tough on me last 2013. I was struggling to find a job, had a hard time adjusting to the terrible weather and adapting to my new environment. Nevertheless, I still have a lot of things to be thankful for. Here are some of my Hits and Misses last year.

HITS
*work - After applying in more than 35 companies, I finally got a call and successfully landed on the job that I like.

*travels - I was able to get some time off from work. Wasted no to time to book my ticket and fly to different cities in Ontario; Montreal and of course explore my own province and nearby towns.
Downtown Winnipeg
Niagara, Kenora, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto

*friends - I'm really blessed to have friends that value our friendship despite the distance and time. I may not get to see them but talking to them in a daily basis makes life and living here tolerable. Yay to all my friends!
meeting in person; chat thru skype, viber and fb
MISSES

*blog - Wrote just a single  entry for 2013. I have a lot of things to say, stories to tell, memories to share and lessons to impart but I was lazy. There were some instances that I started writing but I didn't finish it and it just here in my drafts folder waiting to be published.  Hopefully, this 2014 I can write again. I miss writing; this has been my outlet and lately I am feeling crappy, so maybe I should get back to writing again.

*death - death was so busy last year, everyone I know has lost someone dear to them. I for one, lost my Nanay (grandma) last year. It was the hardest goodbye I have ever made in my life.

*snow - i like it here, its just that I can't stand the cold and snow. its a struggle to go to work let alone go outside the house in -40C temperature. And having snow for almost 6 months is pure torture.

*photo taken from instagram*

So here's to a better year! Cheers 2014! The best is yet to come!

shut up and watch

From Evernote:

shut up and watch

The other night I watched the final installment of The Harry Potter series' Deathly Hallows. And no, I won't give a review or comment about how great or bad the film is or give you any spoiler for those who haven't read the book. This is all about my movie experience.

Okay, so first of all we go to the cinema to watch a movie not to chitchat with our friends or go there to harness our commentator skills. But there are some movie patrons that are really annoying and does not care about people who are there to watch and enjoy the movie too.  I'm all cool with those who give exaggerated reactions (when watching) like a loud laugh, or a high pitch scream, a constant giggle those are all but natural response . What irritates me are those who go to the movie house and watch as if they own the place.

Meet some of my annoying seat mates:

a. The Commentator - these are the people who can never keep their mouth shut. every scene they have to say something; like how lame the actor's expression is; how Ron's eyes are big; how the twins have grown, that Dumbledore looks like Gandalf, that Ginny is ugly, blah blah blah blah blah... Its alright to express your opinion but to give out your comment on every scene and actor is way too much for me to handle. i didn't go there to hear you speak your thoughts on the film.

b. The (feeling) Know-it-All - the smarty pants who thinks that they know everything that happens in the story. even if you read the book or wrote the script itself who don't have the right to tell the others what will happen next or how the protagonist will die or whatever inside info you have read on the book. you're killing the climax!

A man seated at the back explains something about Snape. In all movies, before the film ends there's an explanation why certain events happen. duh?! But he kept on blabbering about it. And then my seat mate, another wiseass said (when he saw the 9 3/4 platform at the train station); oh look, yung nine and three PORTERS! kuya pa-impress: EPIC FAIL!

c. The Chatter - at the very least the commentator and the know-it-all talks about the movie, but the chatter doesn't care about the movie. All she/he cares about are the mundane things that happen about him or between him and his companion. how the exam was hard; or how demanding his boss was. hello?! you can do that talk somewhere else. i didn't go the movie house to listen to your life and problems. I have my own, I don't need yours.

d. The Rocker - these people never sit still. they rock or swing their feet back and forth which in turn makes the whole row feel the swaying motion of his feet. When Law, Mimi and I watched X-Men we thought there was an earthquake, turns out the man at the end of the row was rocking his feet so hard. Mimi and I got dizzy. Please people be considerate.

Also falling on this category are those who tap their feet behind your seat. Its irritating.

e. The Don - speaking of feet, these people doesn't respect those who sits in front of them. They put their feet up on your headrest so you have 2 big rabbit ears behind your head. what's bad is when you turn to face them you'll catch a whiff of smelly feet or worse you might even accidentally kiss their soles.

To deal with those insensitive movie patrons, here's what i do:

a. the move - I shift or change my sitting position and give a loud sigh, enough to make the annoying seat mate realize that they are bothering me.

b. parinig  - if the 'move' doesn't get enough attention; i resort to parinig. i usually say, 'ang ingay naman!' or 'bawal magkwento ng mangyayari', 'wag kang malikot nahihilo ako'. As i said, there was this 'rocker' who kept on swaying his feet, i'm starting to have a headache, so I blurted out, 'isa pa tatadyakan na kita'. then he stop swaying. for a while. then after 10 minutes, he started swaying again which led me to confront him.

c. the confrontation - when all else failed. this is my last resort. i would call their attention and tell to stop talking or stop swaying their feet. it depends on the level of my annoyance, i do it in a nice way. But sometimes, my mean streak would come out and i don't care if they'll be humiliated in front of other people, i'll say what i want.

i tapped the "rocker's", shoulder and said, could you please stop that (pointing to his swinging feet). hilo na kame dito eh! (and by the way, we were one seat apart, and Mimi was 2 seats away from him that's how strong he was swaying).

then there's this one time, i lost my cool and a group of girls seated at my back got a taste of my fury. 'pwede pakihinaan ang kwentuhan nyo, hinde lang kayo ang nanonood dito!

Remember when you watch a movie be mindful of other people watching too.  Don't talk loud, if you can't resist telling the plot, do it discreetly. Please don't put your feet up or rock your feet. Think of your GMRC (Good Morals and Right Conduct) lessons when you were young. Now is the time to make use of that.

cheated

I felt cheated. why?! coz I'm forfeiting my ticket with Cebu Pacific. Our roundtrip ticket costs around 2000php per person for our MNL-LGP-MNL trip this coming July 20. Up until last week I was excited to finally unwind and have my much needed rest. But something came up and the money that was supposed to be used for the trip went to something else more important. Its a promo ticket so the only option is to rebook the flight with penalty of course plus fare difference. Its non-refundable, non-transferable. If we rebook the flight the cost is way too expensive, this I know because I work for an airline that has the same concept as CebuPac. The best option is to forfeit the ticket. Now, I felt how our passengers feel when they can't do anything their flight.

I'm not THAT rich to forfeit a 2000php ticket. It breaks my heart but what else can I do?

And cla, is quite supertitious. She said that there are signs why we should  not push through with the trip. Like me, she had an emergency and her pocket money was used for some unexpected medical expenses. Then, Bogart couldn't confirm our 3 nights stay in Misibis because there's a big event coming up next week, she can only confirm one night, the 2 other nights will be spent on a hotel in the city.

this is what I'll miss... :(   *photos courtesy of vina*

For all my selfish reasons, I wish a storm would come up next week that will make CebuPac cancel the flight and rebook my ticket without penalties. I wish no one any harm, no floods, no very strong rain, no strong wind, just enough drizzle and wind.

Mt. Mayon, Misibis and Pili nuts, I promise i'll visit you some other time.

coffee break

Follow my blog with bloglovin
Earlier today I accompanied "Jericho" (my twin brother from another mother) in his job interview. He'll be thrilled to know that I called him Jericho,. eewww! wahaha! Anyway, he almost convinced me to apply for the job too but something's holding me back. I have to wait for a few months before I can decide if  I'm going to look for a new job or not. There are alot of applicants today. I pity the other guy because he got rejected due to insufficient years of work experience. The applicants today kinda remind me of myself 5 years ago when I was submitting resumes left and right in hopes of finding a job abroad.

This is a common sight if we go and visit employment agencies. The place is almost always packed. Nowadays, right after college everyone wants to leave. Nobody wants to be left behind but who can blame them they just want a better future for their family. Circumstance led them to chose those path. The government should do something about this problem. Create jobs and give the people a decent pay so noone will be tempted to leave or resort to corruption or other wrongful deeds. Government should do something about this rapid brain. We are rearing a parent less generation. And we all know that families are important in honing a person's well being. I just hope in the future everything will turn out all right.

Back to my story... Unfortunately, my twin brother didn't make it. Half of me feels relieved that he'll be staying with us longer, another half feels sad seeing him lose hope.

Nothing but tall mocha frap could cheer him up. And so to Starbucks we went, sat and drank our fraps without talking. Stayed there for 2 hours or so till he was ready...ready for another challenge life has to offer.

PHL airports

A travel site named the guide to sleeping in airports voted NAIA as #5  worst airport in the world and #1 worst airport in Asia.

It doesn't come as a surprise, having been in the airport premises for nearly 8 years (for work and travel)  I can say that we belong to that list, not only NAIA but half a dozen of our domestic airports as well.

Let's say 15,000 passengers per day x 750 terminal fee x 365 days. do the math. What I can't understand is that where did it all the money go?!

NAIA had been my home for 2 years (2003-2005). I don't know if the passenger noticed it but when it rains potted plants suddenly appears at the departure lobby. These plants supposedly absorb/catch water dripping from the terminal ceiling. bright idea huh?!

I have not visited NAIA for almost 4 years now, and I've heard it got worse. Aside from outdated facilities, I heard horror stories about utility personnel asking for 'tip' from passengers using the toilet. At first, I thought its ridiculous and my friend just misinterpreted the way the utility person helped him. But after hearing accounts of the same incident happening to 3 more person I finally accepted the fact that it does exist. Wow, that is just so wrong!

Aside from NAIA, other domestic airport are also in bad state. I wish I had taken photos of the said airports.

One classic example is Caticlan Airport, year in year out  there is a steady flow of tourist arriving and leaving the airport. As far as I can remember, Boracay was famous more than 10 years ago, I was still in college when Secretary of Tourism Mina Gabor went there and said that Boracay waters are clean and safe. The point is, that was eons ago and still Caticlan Airport is small.  I went there 2008 off peak season and boy, the waiting area is packed. Its lean season! What if its summer or peak season?! What will happen to the passengers waiting there? With more than a decade of Boracay's fame weren't the airport officials collected enough money to expand or even repair the airport?!  You don't have to imagine how small or how crowded it can get in Caticlan Airport. I found a video.

off peak, see how small the airport is.

A very crowded Caticlan Airport

I wouldn't mind paying a little higher airport tax if they can make sure that the taxes goes to the improvement of the facilities.

Case in point, Siem Reap, Cambodia. We paid 25USD roughly around 1100php. But the airport is nice, though its quite small its still nice and cozy. More hi-tech than our airport at the same time you can see traces of Cambodian Architecture. You don't see that in NAIA.

Siem Reap Airport *photo taken from www.kestan.com*

Airports are the first thing the tourist see when they come and visit us. We don't wanna ruin their 1st encounter/experience with us. I do hope the government would do something about it, after all its named after PNoy's dad.

Sabi nga ni Senator Miriam Santiago, "I eat death threats for breakfast"! Well, well, well, kame rin!!!

Kailangan matatag at mapacencia ka, coz everyday is a test; so scream (your lungs out after each flight), leave (all those negative comments behind) and survive (another day)!

Ika nga nila, that's my 2 cents worth on this matter.

Have a nice flight!

random musings

It's Saturday night and I'm here in my room letting my mind wander. What better way to spend the weekend but to put words to my thoughts.

so what's on my mind right now?

***
Mc Donald's is celebrating its 30th anniversary (here in the Philippines) and they're bringing back some of their well-loved TV commercials. I really love this particular tvc, it brings a lot of memories, good and not-so-good memories.

let's watch...

***

I've written a letter a few months ago , I wanna post it here just to let it all out from my system. My friend Cla, read it and advised me not to publish it coz its too personal. Upon reading my letter, she understood and felt my wrath, my hurt and my pain. Now, I feel better even if I wasn't able to publish it here, it was good to know that someone can identify with me. Writing helps alleviate the pain. Maybe someday, I'll have the guts to publish it here. I'm okay but still there are moments that memories kept creeping back. I try to shrugged it off.

***

I love reading The Professional Heckler's blog. His posts are witty and are fun to read. There are  times (while reading heckler's blog) my colleagues would catch me smirking and trying to suppress laughter to myself . They must've thought I'm a lunatic. Visit his blog and I'm sure you'll be laughing in no time. Right now, I'm waiting for Professional Heckler's game on twitter (the game is every Saturday night, 930-1100). Last week I joined his game for the first time and my entry got selected and was included in his blog. Beginner's luck. wahaha! It was so fun. His question was, what would you answer if Pnoy asked you to marry him. There are alot of hilarious replies, read here. My reply got picked last minute, check out #78, that's me. :)

update: professional heckler's game is over. and my entry this week wasn't selected. oh well, better luck next time.

***

I have to let this out guys, sorry. I've been keeping it to myself for the past weeks, I just have to let it out. Whoever is reading this and thinks that he/she is the subject of this post, all I can say is bato bato sa langit, ang tamaan ay pangit! wahaha! :P

To whom it may concern, I could be mean if I want to but I chose not to stoop down. I know a lot about you, and I can reveal everything I know that could ruin your life. You have a lot to lose and I don't know if you could live with that. I wonder how well you sleep at night? Peace of mind is hard to get these days. I pray that you come to your senses and change.

Wow, that feels good! I sounded like a b*tch though. Sorry, but I feel the need to let it out.

Today, TJ is 1 week old! I love naming my gadgets, it kinda makes it personal.  Meet Team Apple, we are called Team Apple because Josh and Renel bought Ipad and I was tempted to buy one too, but I think I need a laptop not Ipad. Hence, I bought a macbook.  The first few days, I was having difficulty with TJ. Mac's OS is different from Windows, and I've been using Windows ever since I learned how to operate a computer so I need to adjust. As of now, I'm getting the hang of it and it's not that hard, in fact, the function keys are easier, but that's just me , I guess. I'm a Mac convert now.

newest member of Team Apple * I can't find an updated picture*

the crazy ones, love this ad too!

I read a blog entry of Paolo Coehlo end of last year. At that time, I was going through a rough patch and upon reading this,  I was enlightened. 2011 is my year of unlearning things/habits. To quote what Paolo Coehlo eloquently wrote, "Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person – nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need."

A decades recap

Year 2000 was unforgettable. A lot of firsts had happened during that time. Here's a look back on the past decade; my exhilarating, exciting and tumultuous life at 20.

2000 HOPEFUL
believed it or not, I had my first love that year  (late bloomer much?!). I was full of hope, full of life, ready to take on the world.

2001 UNCERTAINTY
bid  college goodbye. I was excited and scared at the same to get 'out there' in the real world. I had my first job, (at a financial institution) not the field I wanted to be in when I graduate. I haven't figured out where I was headed.

2002 BITTERSWEET
had my first heartbreak.  :( and finally landed on the job I always dreamt of. I  started working at the airport as ground stewardess and slowly making a career. I guess you can't have it all.

2003 FREEDOM
I became independent. Moved out from the comforts of our house and lived at the other side of the metro. It was daunting at first, but it was a liberating experience as well. That same year, I harvested the rewards of my hard labor; first out of the country tour with my barkada.

2004 SACRIFICE
Along with the perks of my work are the downsides. One of it, is working on holidays like Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and the likes. It was my first Christmas/ New year without my family. I was welcoming the new year at the airport ramp, meeting families that were going home to celebrate holidays with their loved ones; when everybody else is on holiday mood,  I'm on duty, double time.

2005 OPTIONS
Quit my job at the airport coz I didn't see any growth in my professional life. Tried various jobs but I learned that you'll always go back to the one you love. I got an offer from a sister company of a big European carrier. I was a travel coordinator, my primary duty is to arrange travel documents of the employees'. I was running from one embassy to another, re booking flights, making hotel arrangements among other things.  Money does not equate to happiness, sure the pay is higher than my measly salary at the airport but that office job is not my cup of tea. I can choose to be practical and be miserable or I can be happy and penniless. :) And so, after 6 months (of office work) I handed my resignation.

2006 LEVEL UP
Good news come to those who wait, got a call from an airline company and I was accepted to work as a ground stewardess aka ground staff. On top of that I'm a direct hire which means I'm not under a ground handling company, (an agency that provides ground stewardess/steward and other ground personnel to airlines) which equates to a decent pay and travel perks. Brought independence in a whole new level, I moved out of the metro and left my comfort zone. This time, I have to pack my bags and move to Pampanga.

2007 DISCOVERIES
I think this was the year that I became full blown travel bug. I also got interested in blogging thus I started to chronicle my life's journey through this blog. I also spurred interest in photography.

2008 CROSSROADS
Learned how to swim, its never too late to try something new. And after all those hard work, I was able to save up and let my family experience the joys of traveling. It is our first international travel as a family. We visited Mickey  Mouse in Hong Kong, experienced eating egg tarts in Macao and see the mighty Petronas. As for my career, I have to face the most difficult decision of my professional life. When you're made to choose between power or principle, what would you do? I'm sure I made the right decision coz I can walk with my head held up high. I learned a lot that year, I discovered that I am 'strong', I was able to stand up to those 'bullies'. And I can overcome all those adversities with the help of my family, it also helped me strengthen my faith in Him.

2009 JUNKIE
This year, I blew up all my savings (as if I have one). Ha ha! most part of 2009, I was travelling. I'm a travel junkie!  I went to Bohol; Guangzhou, China and Cambodia. I get a different high when I travel. Meeting different people, experiencing new culture, sampling different dishes brings joy to me!  and a little misadventure on the side spices everything up. Also brought my 1st DSLR cam to document my travels and to practice my shooting skills. (skills?! am just kidding about the skills thing) he he!

2010 CHANGE
2010 rolled out slow for me. I jump started my 2010 on Chinese New Year (14 Feb2010) by exploring Northern Part of the Philippines. Travel always get me started and hyped. :) I also celebrated 3 decades of my life here on earth! 3 decades?!? Yes, I'm that young. 30 and thriving! I was able to ticked 2 activities on my bucket list (1) crawl inside Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam; (2) try zip lining. Last year was also made for goodbyes. December of 2010, a 'friend' said his farewell to me. One of the most difficult thing to overcome that year. It was like giving up 5-6 years of my daily life. I have to slowly unlearn some of my habits; like chatting, constantly awaiting for his updates, mostly of things about him and me.  If anything came good out if it, I'm free. But still, everyday is a struggle but I'll get by, one day at a time.

The past decade  have its highlights and some lowlights. This is what life is made of, we have to deal what it throws at us and just hope for the best.

I'm ready to face another decade of challenges, struggles, triumphs, dreams and accomplishments. This is how I roll. Let's get it on! :) \m/

  • dahil ba boyish ako kung kukumpara mo sa kanilang 3 girls?! di naman ako tibo (although i have nothing against them).

tsk.tsk. huway me?! huway?!

the 7000 mistake

i made a stupid mistake yesterday! a costly mistake...i overlooked the passport validity of one of the passengers. and now, i have to pay the price for that oversight. damn! stupid!

i could blame the stupid boarding pass (b/p) printer for stressing me out! because it would not print the freakin' b/p unless i hold on to the cable everytime i print. and my colleagues b/p printer isnt working at all! so she needs me to print her b/p too! then...the laptop i'm using would stop at the middle of the check-in process. so i have to open a new window and start all over! WHY DO I HAVE TO TAKE ALL THE FREAKIN CRAP!?! (this is me ranting!)

i could blame all those circumtances for my mistake but NO! i was the one who checked the passports. so i'm the one to blame. maybe its a reminder....maybe i have become complacent and this is a wake up call. *sigh*

things like these...usually happen a few days before i go on vacation. lesson learned: FOCUS! whatever happens...FOCUS on the job at hand.

invisibility

a friend of mine, gave me a cool link that checks your YM friends if they are offline or just in invisible mode. tried it a couple of times and it works! for me the downside side is finding out your friend is in invisible mode and you left a message, then they just ignored you which is totally uncool! :( hmmm.... maybe they are just busy....

hell week

last week was unbelievable! a week of hell, as i would like to describe it... a week of betrayal, mistrust and losing respect!

lessons learned:

  • ephesians 5:11, do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
  • the end does not justify the means
  • friendships end when principles are in question
  • we do not how far the ripples of our decisions go
  • stand up for what you believe in
  • once trust is betrayed you can never regain respect
  • even if the whole world condemns you, be firm and do not be swayed by what the crowd wants you to do
  • do not sacrifice your integrity for the sake of friendship, utang na loob and pakikisama
  • all secrets are bound to be revealed in time, so if you have done something nasty be prepared for the consequences
  • leaders should exemplify good deeds
  • honor your word

dizzier

i'm getting dizzier and dizzier by the minute...

i'm confused, dizzy, gloomy uninspired and tired all at the same time...

i wanna shout; scream my lungs out and cry till i have no tears left...

i think i could cry all day till my eyes ache more than my heart!

lost in translation

this is my 8th time in KL and day 1 was a disaster.

my flight arrived 15 mins ahead of schedule so i thought i have enough time to look for the van that would pick me up. the scheduled pick up is at 1615. i was outside the arrival hall waiting... waiting... waiting...

loser conversation 1

gaiLie: excuse me, sir, do you know where's the van going to _____ condo?
guy 1: no

gaiLie: do you know...........
guy 2: do you have a ticket?
gaiLie: no, i don't have a ticket... it's already pre-arranged, i'm just waiting for it. do you know where they usually park?
guy 2: no

gaiLie: do you know....
guy 3: oh...you must go to the city first, then take a cab blah...blah..blah...

gaiLie: do you know....
guy 4: you look for a red van infront of The Coffee Bean
gaiLie: thanks (finally! someone knew what i was talking about. so, i waited for another 10mins... there was no red van in sight... i'm feeling like a real loser at that time)

frustated, exhausted and hungry... i went to our head office and asked regarding the transport provided for those attending the training. the receptionist gave me directions on how to get in touch with the one in-charge for our airport transfers.

so, i went to the bus counter... there were 2 girls asking for transport going to the same condo as i was. i introduced myself and told them, i too, was looking for the van/bus. turns out, these 2 girls will be attending the same training as mine.

i was relieved and happy but only for a few seconds, the girls will be going to the city. they gave me the number of the girl in-charge and told me that the bus will arrive 5pm. at 5, still no van in sight, so i called the 'van girl' . she told me to wait for 30mins. now, i'm really annoyed but what can i do, i don't have the address of the condo, i don't know how to get there. so i just waited for the next scheduled pick-up.

i went to mc donald's to grab something to eat, im starving. i haven't eaten anything since i left philippines. as i was about to take bite on my precious meal, my mobile rang. the 'van girl' told me that the van is already outside the airport. i quickly went outside and look for the van. but i can't find it.

loser conversation 2

gaiLie: hi, this is gail. i'm have been waiting for the van for 5 mins but i can't see anything. i'm infront of The Coffee Bean. Where did the van parked?
van girl: you go outside. look for RED van!
gaiLie: im outside! right infront of The Coffee Bean!
van girl: go outside, you see red bus? skybus?
gaiLie: yes, Sky bus. but i thought i was skyvan!
van girl: no, bus! B-U-S! red! infront of skybus is skyvan.
gaiLie: ok i'll check!

there is no van infront of the red bus, just another bus, and another bus, then another bus. no van! so, i asked the man standing nearby. someone overheard our conversation, a man approached me and said he was the driver of the van going to the condo! finally! when i saw the van, it was not red. not a bit of red in it! it's white and green. if i'm not that exhausted, i'd go back to the counter and i'll tell the van girl, where's the RED she's talking about!
what a day!

i am miss understood

i did something today that i know i can be proud of in the future. i shared the good news to someone close to me... i thought i would make them happy and proud, instead their initial reaction was disappointment.
i too was disappointed, it saddens me that this so-called "my proud moment" was interpreted in a wrong way. i just hope someday they would understand my intentions and they can be proud of what i have done.
for the meantime...i'll just continue what i started and patiently wait for results...

no regrets! i know what i did was right!

wrong move

ever made a decision without thinking about the consequences because you thought it wasnt a biggie?! later you realize that you're already trapped and that you cant bail out... me?! i did that mistake too.

and now, im suffering because of that. and lately, even the smallest things can get pretty annoying. and you cant do anything about it but just to live with it.

oh well, that's life. you win some, you lose some.

unbelievable

VERTICAL HORIZON
LIVE IN MANILA

Why in the world I didn't hear about this?!

Bambi emailed me last night asking for the date of Vertical Horizon's upcoming concert. I couldn't believe they're here! I found out the concert will be tomorrow. Nobody told me about this! (well, except for Bambi). I haven't heard any announcement on the radio or seen any billboards regarding the concert. Its too late, if I have found out days ago, I could have arranged my schedule. I would really watch this one.

(sigh) waaaahhhh... I missed it! Too bad!
